Today you are going to learn how to make authentic Puerto Rican Sofrito Recipe, let's begin!
There are so many ways to make sofrito and today you are going to learn what makes Puerto Rican sofrito different and how to make it at home!
You will also learn a key ingredient anywhere in the US.
I tell you what, sofrito is so easy to make and I even showed you how to create a basic sofrito recipe at home to make your meals taste even better.
What is different from a basic sofrito recipe is that well is basic. Still good, but not the Puerto Rican sofrito I grew up enjoying.
Many asked me to post the recipe we use in our family, and I decided why not?
What is Puerto Rican sofrito?
Puerto Rican sofrito is used as a base when creating Puerto Rican meals. What makes Puerto Rican sofrito different is that no tomatoes are added to this recipe.
A fun fact is that Puerto Rican sofrito is called recaito in Puerto Rico and is made with culantro and sweet chili peppers which gives it an excellent taste.
Where can I find culantro to make sofrito?
Culantro is available in Spanish store, or you can buy the plant here or the seed here. In our nearest ethnic market is about $3 for a pack.
I use sofrito in most of my recipes, and I’m addicted. During the holiday, we make a big batch and freeze the rest and this last me through the holiday season.
Anyone can make this recipe because it is so easy to make. You can’t mess it up. Seriously, you can’t!
How to Make Puerto Rican Sofrito
One important key I want to add that you are welcome to add one medium tomato and also add salt to this recipe if you like. I sometimes add olive oil too.
Ingredients
- Medium Spanish onion
- 5 cubanelle peppers, seeded
- 15 garlic cloves, peeled
- Bunch of cilantro
- 8 ajiles dulces (sweet chili peppers)
- 5 leaves of culantro
- 1 large red bell pepper, seeded
Directions:
Add ingredient to blender and blend until smooth.
Can you freeze authentic Puerto Rican sofrito?
Sofrito can be frozen and you are going to learn how. I prefer using freezer-friendly bags and laid them flat in my freezer. Once you lay the bag it freezes pretty fast and it is easy to snatch a piece.
Another popular way to freeze sofrito is to use ice cube trays. Once you are done making the Puerto Rican sofrito use a Tablespoon or spoon and fill each cube with sofrito. Place in the freezer and once the sofrito is frozen remove them from the tray and place them in freezer bags for later use.
You can also use freezer-friendly containers as well to freeze your sofrito.
How long does sofrito last in the freezer?
From my experience sofrito can last up to a year if stored correctly.
