Delicious tacos al vapor or steamed tacos are popular with street vendors. Filled with your favorite fillers, and toppings you and your family are going to love.

Chances are you’ve eaten many hard or soft shell tacos, but what about steamed tacos? Tacos al vapor, or steamed tacos, are a spin on the classic taco you know and love.

Much messier than your traditional taco, these are sure to become a hit in your household due to the bold flavors and unique cooking process. Let’s take a closer look at how to make tacos al vapor.

What are tacos al vapor?

Tacos al vapor are steamed tacos, but there’s more to it than that. The trick is the tortilla which is brushed with a flavorful mixture of spices and then fried before being filled with your favorite filling, wrapped, and then steamed. The cooking process creates one of the most flavorful tacos you’ve ever eaten.

What makes tacos al vapor different?

The biggest difference in tacos al vapor is the flavorful tortilla. A mixture of chiles, garlic, and clove are blended and brushed onto the tortillas which are then fried. There is a lot of love in these tacos and that means a lot of flavors.

What can you fill steamed tacos with?

You can add whatever ingredients you like. Add your favorite Mexican cheeses, such as cotija. You can add carne asada, seasoned chicken, even mashed or fried potatoes. Get creative. This is a great way to use up any leftovers you have to make something completely new.

What are the ingredients to make Tacos al Vapor?

To make tacos al vapor you are going to need the following ingredients:

  • Corn tortillas
  • Oil
  • Chile anchos
  • Garlic clove
  • Pinch of ground clove
  • Cup water
  • Filling of your choice

How to make Tacos al Vapor

Now that you have gathered your ingredients it is time to make your steamed tacos. All you have to do is follow the steps below.

The recipe begins by blending your chiles, garlic, and clove until smooth. This mixture will then be brushed onto your tortillas and the tortillas fried in oil on both sides.

Fill the tortillas with your favorite meats and cheeses and then fold. Wrap the tortillas in cloth and steam for 20 minutes. You’ll have flavorful, moist tacos that your family will rave about.

Tacos Al Vapor

Tacos Al Vapor

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 Corn tortillas
  • 4 Tbsp oil
  • 2 Chile anchos
  • 1 Garlic clove
  • Pinch of ground clove
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Filling of your choice

Instructions

In a pot over high heat boil the chiles until soft. Drain and transfer to a blender. Add the garlic clove, pinch of ground clove and water and pulse until smooth.
Heat 1 Tbsp oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brush a tortilla with the Chile ancho sauce and take to the pan. Fry it for a minute or until lightly golden. Fill it with your filling of choice and fold.
Repeat the process with the rest of the tortillas.
Wrap the tortillas in a piece of cloth and place it in a steamer pot. Steam for around 20 minutes.

Notes

I stuffed these tacos with carne asada and cotija cheese.
