This is super refreshing and can be made in a pitcher as well. Not only that, you will not worry about the amount of sugar in it. Keto Margarita will not disappoint you after all.

This time, I made it by the glass so you can have margaritas for 2 (we are social distancing after all).

The secrete is using a liquid sweetener. You can use stevia or Monkfruit, both work well. I’m pretty sure that any other liquid sweetener works as well.

What is Margarita?

A margarita is a cocktail with a mixture of tequila, orange liqueur, (sometimes called triple sec), and lime juice. It is usually served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is also served with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen margarita), or even without ice (straight up).

For more sweetness, agave syrup is usually added. With these combinations, obviously, it contains high carbohydrates.

What about Keto Margarita?

It is the same refreshing, citrusy margarita but without added refined sugar or any high carb sweetener such as syrups.

Although alcoholIc drinks are not highly recommended because they may cause certain damage to the body, they can be a great treat for the very low carb and keto dieters once in a while. Well, as long as you don’t drink too much. And, I can say, this is way better than liquours with high carbs in them.

With the added salt on the rim of the glass, it can also help to balance the electrolytes in your body while you are on that diet.

If you remember, the keto diet is a proven anti-inflammatory, too. It makes a lot of extra fluid flush out of the body fast. Thus, you need to increase your intake of electrolytes.

Why the Salt?

It may seem a distinguishing way to know that drink is a margarita, but there is a purpose. Because there is bitterness in the drink, salt seems to suppress it. The salt makes the sour-sweet taste of a margarita burst.

Even with a small amount of salt, it turns the sour-sweetness taste more intense. It is effective in busting bitterness which then enhances the sourness. That’s why there are bartenders who add a few drops of saline solution to citrusy drinks to enhance the flavor.

Furthermore, a tiny amount of salt build-up the flow of saliva and makes the drink seems to be richer and thicker.

Fun facts about Margarita

  • The invention of the first frozen margarita was made in 1971. It was based on a soft-served ice cream machine.
  • The national Margarita Day is on February 22.
  • The Guinness World Record for the largest margarita had a tank measured almost 17 ft tall and 10 ft wide that contained 2,135 gallons of tequila, 2,282 gallons of Margaritaville Margarita mix of 730 gallons of triple sec, and 3,400 gallons of Lemon-x margarita mix. This was also held in Margaritaville Casino at the Flamingo hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • The most expensive margarita ever served in the world is Cantina Laredo Margarita. It is sold in a Mexican restaurant named Cantina Laredo in Convent Garden. It is a blend of 2 exclusive tequilas,  the £2,000-a-bottle 1800 Colección and the Jose Cuervo Platino with juices from white pineapples and limequats, and then finished with the flesh of finger limes, and topped with a diamond that floats on a pineapple flower. The cost is £50,000.

And again in 2016 and 2019 according to surveys conducted by Nielsen.
  • For the history and who made the margarita first, it’s quite complicated and there are a lot of claims. Even the inventor of the first Keto Margarita is unknown.
