Guava and cheese empanadas are delicious desserts or appetizers that can be baked in the oven or an air fryer. Guavas originated from South America, but they're popular worldwide because of their sweet and tangy flavor.

They have been used as inspiration for many recipes such as fruit jams, pies, sauces, cocktails, sorbets-even ice cream! You will need guava paste (you can also use cream cheese), shart cheddar cheese or cream cheese, and empanada discs to make this recipe.

What are empanadas?

Empanadas are fried or baked pastries. Empanadas can be filled with various meats, such as beef, chicken, pork- even vegetarian fillings like cheese and/or potatoes! No one type of pastry makes an empanada; crusts range from the traditional pie crust to puff pastry.

What is empanada dough made of?

Empanada dough is made of flour, salt, and water. It can also include egg yolks or whole eggs, olive oil, butter, or lard for flavor and texture; sometimes, a little sugar is added. They're generally not crispy like pie crusts- they're soft with an airy crumble on the outside. Empanadas can be fried or baked.

Can I purchase premade empanada disc?

Yes, you can purchase premade empanada discs. You may find them in the ethnic aisle at your local grocer.

They come in two different colors, orange, and white. The white discs can be used for empanada and pastries. When it comes to creating pastries, we used white color discs.

I don't have white discs. Can I use the orange?

Yes, you can use the orange disc found at your local grocery. They are more popular than the white ones and more available.

Can I fry this instead of baking them?

Yes, you can fry the empanadas instead of baking them. Use your favorite frying oil and fill the pan about 1/2 inch with oil.

Heat the pan over medium heat and wait until the oil is heated.

Carefully add the empanadas and fry them until both sides are golden brown (about 2 minutes per side).

  • Sharp cheddar cheese (or cream cheese) – We used Heluva Good! Special Reserve Extra Sharp Cheddar
  • Empanada discs (thawed)
  • Cooking spray (optional)
  • Powder sugar (topping)

How to Make Guava and Cheese Empanadas

Now that you have the ingredients it is time to make this guava dessert. Follow the instructions below.

Guava paste with cheese is a great combination and these two Puerto Rican cheesy appetizers will be a hit at your next gathering!

Cut the guava paste about 1-inch square or longer, it all depends on how your flavor preference.

Cut the cheese 1-inch square or longer. This, again, depending on how much you personally prefer and how big the discs are.

Make sure that the discs are thawed before creating this recipe.

Add the guava and cheese to one-half of the disc and fold the disc.

Once you fold the disc, use a fork and press it against the empanada edge to seal it. Make sure you seal both sides of the empanada.

Spray a cooking sheet and place the empanadas at least one inch apart. Spray cooking oil (optional) to give it a crispy crust.

Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes.

Spray the empanadas with cooking spray to give them a crispy crust.

Place the guava dessert in the basket or air fryer oven very carefully and bake for about 5 minutes.

Your crust should be light golden brown.

These baked cheese and guava empanadas are great baked, fried, or air-fried. All you need 3 ingredients, and you will be enjoying this pastry in no time.

Made with cheese, guava paste, and frozen empanada discs. Serve them as a snack on their own or serve them for breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 10 Empanada discs, thawed
  • 8 ounces sharp cheese or favorite cheese
  • 10 oz of Guava Paste (some stores carry bigger sizes)
  • Cooking Spray
  • Powder sugar for toppings (optional)

Instructions

Size your guava paste to fit the preference of your taste. We cut them 1-inch square to fit the small disc.

Cut the cheese into approximately one-inch squares or longer. Again, this depends on how much you personally prefer and how thick the discs are.

Place the guava and cheese on one half of the disc and fold it in half.

Once you fold the empanada and secure it with a fork, press it against the edge to seal both sides.

Over instructions:

Preheat your oven or air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spray a cooking sheet and place the empanadas 1 inch apart on the pan. Lightly spray olive oil or favorite cooking spray so that it gives you that crispier texture.

Bake the dough for about 15 minutes. It should create air bubbles or be fully baked.

Air fryer instructions:

To air-fry these guava and cheese empanadas, there are some things to know.

If you have a fryer with a basket, it will cook faster than if you have one that has a front door attachment.

Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes.

Check again and added for another few minutes if not done. Your crust should be light golden brown.

You can use pie crust if you can't find empanada discs at the store.
