4 Crazy Ways to Get Cheap Groceries
What are liquidators?
Liquidators are companies that purchase good and products from closing companies with the intent to resell.
Liquidators, sometimes known as grocery outlets, are an amazing place to save money grocery shopping. Many people think that these stores are only filled with dented cans and expired food.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. While many foods are close to expiring (and some are expired), you can find many great foods that are still in date.
There are even foods that have excellent dates that companies have stopped selling or the packaging has changed on. If there are one of these stores in your area, visit it. You’ll be surprised at what you find.
Grocery outlets and other liquidators are one of the best places to grocery shop on a budget!
Many benefits of shopping at grocery outlets or liquidator stores and one of my favorites are buying organic products and diapers!
Some companies have email and they offer weekly sales on their product which will save you even more.
If you are worried about their return policy, know that these companies do offer a return policy on product2.
They are not in the business of selling you junk, and they want to make sure you are a happy returning customer.
Look for Extreme Markdowns
Throughout many grocery stores, you’ll find many extreme markdowns. Stores will mark down meat, produce, and bakery items that are close to the date. These are still great items.
You can freeze the meat for later use or use that day. The same goes for the produce and baked goods.
Don’t be afraid of these items if you know you’re going to use them immediately or freeze them for later.
Find out when your store puts these items out and what day they mark down meat.
Know the Truth About Expiration Dates
This is my favorite tip because not many people know about this and it also reduces food waste! About 20% of food waste is due to expiration dates.
Expiration dates only started being added to food in the 1970s. Expiration dates on milk were added in the 1930s. Think about that for a moment.

Also, what’s the deal with expiration and sell by/use by and even best by dates? It’s all very confusing.
So what is “Sell By” date?
Sell By date is to show when the manufacturer should stop selling this product and for the companies to ensure they are selling the best quality food.
What is “Best by” or “Best if used by” or “Use by”?
These terms show the estimated date when the food will no longer be at its freshness or highest quality but doesn't guarantee that it will go bad.
You will not get sick after eating the food after this date you just might notice a difference in quality.
Obviously, you want to pay attention to expiration dates when it comes to things that could make you very sick, such as milk, eggs, and meat.
When it comes to things like cereal, canned vegetables, etc., you will see dates that can be ignored.
These are dates that promise the freshness and quality of the food. The food may lose some of its nutritional value if it goes by that date but it’s still perfectly safe to eat.
Go Beyond Grocery Stores
Last, but not least, grocery stores aren’t the only place to get food. A great example is the Dollar Tree. Many people think that the Dollar Tree only has poor quality food.
This is so wrong.
The Dollar Tree often gets in shipments of name brand foods. At the time of this article, the company has recently carried General Mills cereals, Pop-Tarts, Keebler products, and even Cool Whip. The dates are also good on these products.
Many people may find these tips crazy, but they can save you so much money. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box to feed your family. From experience, I will tell you that it gets easier to shop and you will see your saving grow.
