Where did flan originate?

When you think of flan, you immediately think of Latino cultures. Flan, though actually originated in Rome. This is a real shock to many people who believe it to be a Spanish or Mexican dessert.

The dessert dates back to the Roman Empire. Of course, the Romans spoke Latin and there is a lot of backstory to how the word flan came to be.

According to the site Cheesecake.com, “The name comes from the Old French word, ‘flaon,’ from the Late Latin word, ‘fladon,’ which is derived from the Old High German word ‘flado,’ which means a flat cake or object.”

What are the ingredients to make Instant Pot Pumpkin Flan?

To make this Instant Pot Pumpkin Flan, you are going to need the following ingredients:

  • Sugar
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Eggs
  • Evaporated milk
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Pumpkin pie spice

How to make Instant Pot Pumpkin Flan

Now that you have gathered your ingredients, it is time to make Instant Pot Pumpkin Flan. All you have to do is follow the steps below:

Prepare the caramel

Using a medium saucepan, add the sugar and heat over medium heat. Don’t get the heat too high, or you will burn the sugar and have to start over.

Continue to stir the sugar while it is heating and until it gets brown. It’s important to keep the sugar moving so that it doesn’t burn.

The sugar will continue to darken until it turns into caramel.

Pour the caramel into the flan pan.

Blend the rest of the ingredients into a blender and mix until the mixture looks creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes.

Add 1 ½ cups of water inside the Instant Pot pot and add the steam rack.

Pour the flan mixture into the flan pan and cover. The cover will keep the water out of the pan.

Place the pan inside the Instant Pot.

Add the lid and close the valve.

Press the Manual or Pressure Cooker button, high, for 30 minutes, and natural release.

Carefully remove the pan from inside the Instant Pot and refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours.

Once chilled, run a knife along the edge of the pan and then place a plate on top. Hold the plate in place and quickly flip the two over so that the flan releases onto the plate.

Instructions

  7. Once chilled, run a knife along the edge of the pan and then place a plate on top.
  8. Hold the plate in place and quickly flip the two over so that the flan releases onto the plate.

Notes

Depending on the IP flan mold you use, you might not be able to use all of your flan mixtures.

However, you can split this, make two, and set the pressure time to 20 minutes.

I used a deep flan mold to create this flan.
