What Are Ways to Cook Corned Beef

Cooking corned beef can seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! Here are four easy ways to get delicious, tender corned beef every time.

1. Instant Pot: This is the fastest and easiest way to cook corned beef. Place the brisket in the pot with the onion wedges, garlic, thyme, pickling spice, and six cups of water. Lock the lid and set it to high pressure for one hour per pound of meat.

2. Boiled: Boiling is a traditional way to cook corned beef and a great option if you don't have an Instant Pot. Fill a large pot with enough water, so the brisket is completely submerged, and bring it to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to a low simmer for 2 1/2 – 3 hours per pound of meat until the brisket is tender and sliceable.

3. Oven-Braised: This slower method of cooking corned beef creates tender results with plenty of flavors. Start by removing the brisket from its package, rinsing it if desired, and patting it dry. Place it in a roasting pan with vegetables such as potatoes or carrots, and pour some liquid (like beer or broth) into the bottom of the pan. Cover tightly with foil and bake at 325°F for one hour per pound of meat until the brisket is tender but still sliceable.

4. Slow Cooker: This method gives you delicious results without constantly monitoring the meat. Place your well-rinsed brisket in your slow cooker, vegetables like onions and potatoes, and some liquid like beer or broth. Cook on low for 8-10 hours until tender but still sliceable.

No matter which method you choose, cooking corned beef doesn't have to be intimidating – follow these simple steps for delicious results every time!

What is the best method to cook corned beef?

When it comes to cooking corned beef, the best method is to braise or oven-cook it. This method ensures the beef is cooked slowly and gently to get the most tender results.

To cook corned beef using this method, remove the brisket from the package and rinse, if desired, before patting it dry.

Place in a Dutch oven or a roasting pan, cover with water and spices and cook over low heat for several hours. The slow-cooking process ensures the flavors of the spices have time to infuse into the meat and that it is cooked evenly throughout.

If you'd like to get dinner on the table faster, an Instant Pot, Slow Cooker, or Pressure Cooker can also be used for a delicious corned beef dinner.

What happens if you don't rinse corned beef before cooking?

If you don't rinse your corned beef before cooking, the flavor of the meat will likely be overly salty. This is because the curing process draws out a lot of salt from the meat, and if you don't rinse it off, you're left with an excess of it.

Not only will this make the meat overly salty, but it can also make the texture of the corned beef tough. Rinsing off the excess salt before cooking will ensure that your corned beef is flavorful and tender.

Additionally, if you are using a pre-made brine for your corned beef, rinsing away any excess salt isn't just a suggestion – it's a must! By rinsing off any excess salt in the brine before cooking, you can ensure that your corned beef won't be too salty and that it will have a great flavor.
